It looks, too, at the huge role played by women in the British Empire: how imperialism shaped English women's lives and how women also molded the Empire. It considers the influence of religion, education, and politics, especially the advent of organized feminism and the suffragette movement. It charts the poverty and struggles of the working class as well as the leadership roles of middle-class and elite women. Using diaries, letters, memoirs as well as social and statistical research, it looks at life-expectancy, sex, marriage, and childbirth, and work inside and outside the home, for all classes of women. While it is mostly a personal work, Shōnagon's writing and poetic skill makes it interesting as a work of literature, and it is valuable as a historical document.” In it she included lists of all kinds, personal thoughts, interesting events in court, poetry, and some opinions on her contemporaries. The work of Shōnagon consists of a collection of essays, lists, anecdotes, poems, and descriptive passages that have little connection to one another except for the fact that they are ideas and whims of what Shōnagon was thinking of in any given moment in her daily life. “ The Pillow Book is a book of observations and musings recorded by Sei Shōnagon during her time as court lady to Empress Consort Teishi during the 990s and early 1000s in Heian Japan. What is a pillow book? This is what Wikipedia has to say about Shonagon's book: You might remember me talking about the book in another post about insomnia, titled " Insomnia for Poetry Lovers." Bjornson is destined to be a great author of American historical fiction. Part subtle morality play, part slam-bang adventure, part enduring romance, “Wide Open” is a story to savor. Will discovers that honor trumps loyalty, the frailty of heros and the value of hard work. His story is allegory for the town, indeed, for the whole of the Great Plains. The town is in such trouble that they hire “Wild Bill” Hickok as sheriff.Ībilene grew up with WIll and in 1871 it changed as he did. Mother and father are separately holding secret meetings. This cattle season has the town physically divided in two parts with Will's friends doing their best to start a turf war. But in the summer of 1871, Merritt senior harbored a secret that would change the city and maybe destroy it. Will Merritt's father helped develop Abilene, Kansas as the premier town where Texas cattle are exchanged for eastern money. ![]() A coming-of-age story with conflict and resolution, loss and gain, love and tragedy. Eerily transporting descriptions interspersed with fast-paced action. “Wide Open”, Larry Bjornson's first novel, is a great read. ![]() ![]() ![]() The author is humorous and clever on several levels. *** I have read every Pratchett book (up to Fifth Elephant) at least 3 times. Some have awful affectations for accents. They are not appropriate for reading satirical fantasy. The sound production is extremely competent. Summary: All in all, buy the book, not the audible. ![]() I hope that Audible will acquire the ISIS version and continue to provide the ISIS versions of this series. However, since I have learned that ISIS has produced this book with Stephen Briggs reading, I don't think I can recommend this version. If you like the series, you will enjoy this one also. ![]() The story is another wonderful Discworld title. Several of the characters are well done by this group, which makes it even more disturbing when the voice for that character changes. I cannot come up with any reason why this was done except for the possibility that the person reading was the one who showed up to work that day. Having multiple people read a book is a fine idea, but why does this group have a tendency to change parts at will? You get used to hearing one voice read a character and then you get a different person reading the character with completely different style. Out of all the Discworld books offered by this site, this is the first one to disappoint me. 5 Stars for the story, 1 star for the reading ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Philadelphia, PA 19103 Is the Facebook settlement legit? As the nearest existing equivalent I have chosen the word ‘nationalism’, but it will be seen in a moment that I am not using it in quite the ordinary sense, if only because the emotion I am speaking about does not always attach itself to what is called a nation - that is, a single race or a geographical area. In the same way, there is a habit of mind which is now so widespread that it affects our thinking on nearly every subject, but which has not yet been given a name. ![]() Somewhere or other Byron makes use of the French word longeur, and remarks in passing that though in England we happen not to have the word, we have the thing in considerable profusion. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s going to every country except the ones that don’t have Netflix, so it’s going to Iran.” He laughs. Huge progresses have been made in LGBTQ representation in the 43 years since Maupin began penning the stories, which were initially serialised in the San Francisco Chronicle before being turned into novels and eventually adapted for television, prompting the 75-year-old to marvel: “Any old queer, this one in particular, will tell you it’s gotten better for us and we can’t believe what we’re seeing right now.” “But of course we wanted Netflix because it reaches everywhere,” says the creator of the most enduring queer saga in literary and TV history. The fact the new Tales Of The City is going out on a global platform isn’t lost on Armistead Maupin. ![]() ![]() Also, Zukav seems to feel that repeating an idea or concept three times is the best way to convey it to the lay person.Įxcept for these peeves, it was magnificent to look at Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg etc not as scientists discussing theories and experiments but as philosophers arguing over the nature of reality and mysticism. The only complaint about the book is the fact that it goes into needless depth about the fundamentals of classical physics and then skims over the "new physics" to an extent. It was just that we, with our obsessive propensity to classify and divide had made the artificial boundaries. ![]() ![]() The happiest thought I take out of this book is the fact that science is no longer taking a direction opposite to that of religion, philosophy or spirituality - all the noblest endeavors of mankind were fundamentally tied together after all. ![]() |
