The stories were a perfect example of Lobel’s wit and quirkiness, they would all be great introductions to literary elements like moral and personification. Fables ended up being a small collection of page-long stories about various animals doing very human things, with an accompanying moral at the bottom of each story and a full-color illustration on the opposite page. I love Frog and Toad books, Lobel writes with a dry humor that is wonderful and his sketches bring very human-like expressions to his characters’ faces. When Fables came up, it was an easy choice.įor those who don’t recognize the author, Arnold Lobel is the writer and illustrator of the Frog and Toad books, and others such as Mouse Soup. ![]() I ended up just reading through a long list of Caldecott winners, there were several that caught my eye, and several more that I had already read or seen in my school’s library.
